Description

In my opinion there must be a lot of butter. A teacake is not the same without oozing butter. This rich, warm, soft hand dyed colour is all about capturing that bite, sweetness, and joy. Rich toasted browns sprinkled with raisin purples and glistening butter creams. The toaster is waiting if you can’t take any more.

We have hand dyed only a few of these lovelies, each super chunky skein is packed full of colour, and they are fresh to go. Extend your index finger, and ready your thumb to pinch one or two of our special hand dyed hanks. They are all 100% wool and a 100% naughty. Hand knitting just became edible.

What can I use this super chunky for?

How far does a skein of point five super chunky yarn go? Well, we suggest 2 skeins for a scarf and three for a shawl. If you are thinking of knitting a sweater then amounts vary from 8 -11 skeins on a 12mm knitting needle. If you buy 2 or more skeins, then you will receive a free downloadable snood pattern to get you started.  This snood is really easy to knit, so no need to sweat it. Also, the lovely thing about this hand dyed yarn is that the varied and vibrant colours do all the work for you. So, by keeping it simple you end up looking like you have made something quite stunning.

I have been knitting with yarn from Colinette for many years, and have always been very satisfied with the quality of the yarn. I have also had several orders shipped to Norway, and both customer service and delivery are excellent.

Just love point five. The colours are gorgeous and on large needles it grows so quickly. Pity it is so expensive or I would be knitting with it all the time. It’s definitely my favourite

Beautiful yarns. I used to buy these regularly but the shop closed down and I’ve been without them for some years. I was delighted to find your website. I love making scarves with them. The textures of the wool are beautiful for these.

Colinette Yarns Point Five raw materials

The Raw Fibre for a Perfect Yarn

It is often said that the key to great cooking starts with the ingredients, and I think the mediterranean diet is testament to this fact. Well, the same is true for creating great hand dyed yarn. Choosing exquisite fibres form the start will make for a genuinely knock out skein of yarn. We have been working with spinners for close to 40 years and in that time, we have learnt a thing or two about getting the magic exactly right. Soft, creamy, 100% wool are the key ingredients for success to our point five yarn. Every time I hold a freshly spun hank of this super chunky yarn I wonder at the feel, smell, and purity of the fibres. I know it is our passion to add colour but sometimes I am compelled to wait a little, a moment just before I start.

Dying the most beautiful Skeins of Yarn

I have sung the importance of the ingredients and rightly so, but without love and passion colour runs flat and dull. We have all watched the TV shows rolling through the mountains to find a little restaurant, one that has cooked up wonders through the years until the dishes become a ‘thing’. Well, it is true, and I like to think that over the years Point Five is our ‘thing’. We know it, play the transitions from raw materials to colour seeping into the strands, to finally allowing it to rest slowly, now on the path to becoming the soft patisserie like woollen twist that you hold in your hand. Love is in this cookery and so is pride, so when you hold these jewels think of it as a ‘thing’ of tradition if you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Point Five Yarn?

Point Five is Colinette Yarns signature dish made of 100% pure wool and spun to a thick and thin (slub) style yarn. It is classed as a super chunky and can be knitted using a 12mm or more knitting needle.

Will Colinette Yarns Point Five felt?

Yes is the short answer, people over the years have used this teased out and overlaid on to other materials then felted. If however, you do not want to felt this yarn then some care is needed when washing it.

Can you use a washing machine to wash the Point Five yarn?

We do not advise machine washing for this yarn. As the fibre is very open, it will felt if overly agitated and or subject to big changes in temperature. A washing machine both heats up and agitates the items so the warning bells are ringing. So better to threat this hand dyded product with some good old fashioned hand washing in cold water using very little soap. Gently rinse and squeeze out some of the excess water. Lay the project flat on a towel to dry. Do not forget to turn once in a while and take away the towel once most of the moisture has been collected by it.

What size knitting needles and crochet needle do you recommend?

We suggest a 12mm upwards depending on the effect you are after. Colinette like the loose style and we have been know to go up to 20mm.

Will Point Five pill?

Pilling happens to most woolen yarns as a matter of course, over time the outer parts of the fibre rub and join to make little ball of fluff. But wait, with a bit of patience and maybe a combination of carefully pulling the balls off and things like sellotape even Velcro you can bring back a garment from looking tired to feeling fresh and new. Just go carefully when de-pilling and if you are pulling too much off then you are using the wrong technique.

Are these Yarns all hand dyed?

At Colinette we only hand dye our yarns, that is the way we have always done it. And the largest amount dyed in a single pot is a kilo. So we really are the artisan alchemist we say we are.

Is Colinette a real person?

As her son I can most definitely vouch for her. I do remember a conversation once at a TNNA show in the USA where the people at the table were discussing this very question. Finally a knitter joined the table and said that Colinette was real, and that she had taken one of her courses in the UK and even stayed overnight at her house. I was pleased I did not have to resolve this debate myself, and left the table with a small smile on my face.
