Description

We dye our yarns in small batches in our dye workshop in Marlborough, UK. Colours may vary from skein to skein, even within the same dye-lot. This is part of the charm of a hand painted yarn. If you buy more than one then we will do our best to match them as closely as possible. We take great care in photographing our yarns, but some colours may vary slightly.

Just love point five. The colours are gorgeous and on large needles it grows so quickly. Pity it is so expensive or I would be knitting with it all the time. It’s definitely my favourite

Why would I order my yarn from Britain when I’m in Canada. The main reason, of course is top quality wools. The other many reasons can be seen on one of the best websites I go to regularly - breathtaking colour, succinct info and, lately, marvellously written, funny and quirky emails and blogs from the company’s new HQ in Wiltshire. Got a missive today from ‘Sam’ about entanglement and using expressions like ‘Bazinga,’ ‘Whammo’ and ‘like a plate of spaghetti arrabiata’. Makes one want to run to the chesterfield and turn out a bunny hug or a toque. Nothing dull about these yarn spinners. Brightens up a Canuck winter with “Vibrancy, Love, Passion, Yarn, Wool and Fibre.” Thanks, Colinette.

Sam was able to locate a skein of Jitterbug yarn that I needed to complete a project. I was thrilled to receive it before the holidays and was able to finish the shawlette in time for gift-giving. A big thank you to Sam for the great service and getting the yarn to me in the U.S. so quickly.

I took advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free sale in a BIG WAY. Sam was concerned that maybe my credit card information had been compromised, and he contacted me to doublecheck that I had indeed purchased that much yarn. - This goes well beyond customer service!

The service and delivery were fine. I found the website good for images of the stock, but could not get the hang of ‘I am a robot’ questions. I had to get my husband to navigate it for me!

The Finest Mohair Yarn

Light, fluffy and by gosh so warm. When I put these undyed hanks into their pot it reminds me of a perfectly baked soufflé, and just as there is a moment before you eat it  (the soufflé that is), where you can not bring yourself to disturb its beauty, you dive straight in.  And so the colour goes in, on, and around these mohair strands and from white you see a slow transition into colour. Magic. As a yarn mohair is a great ingredient to may varied projects, knitted throws, crochet shawls, and more. It may be a luxury fibre but just remember a little goes a long way.

It is Like dying a cloud

It always surprises me how mohair takes to the hand-dyed process, just when you think there is nothing happening, suddenly the fibres find their groove and the disco begins. For me the dreamy quality of this mohair yarn is showcased by selecting subtle creams, blues and yellows. Do not get me wrong, I love a bright pink or turquoise, but in the calmness of marble and Monet resides a rare beauty. We take great care with dying this delicate yarn and pride ourselves in getting each step just right. Mohair needs a lot of love, and when it gets it, shares its beauty with us all.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mohair?

Our mohair is a luxury yarn made from the hairs of Angora goats. Soft and very warm the composition of our mohair is 75% mohair 20% wool 5% nylon. This high percentage of mohair makes our mohair exceptional in quality and also in vibrancy and luster.

Will Colinette Yarns Mohair shed?

Mohair is made from natural hairs and as a yarn it is coupled with wool and a touch of nylon to both give it body and strength. Whilst the fibres bind the mohair together there will be some shedding as mohair is very sleek. This is entirely normal and not something to worry about. We have mohair based throws that were made some 30years ago and they are still plump and fluffy.

Can you use a washing machine to wash Moahir?

We do not advise machine washing for this yarn. As the fibre is very open, it will felt if overly agitated and or subject to big changes in temperature. A washing machine both heats up and agitates the items so the warning bells are ringing. So better to treat this hand dyded product with some good old fashioned hand washing in cold water using very little soap. Gently rinse and squeeze out some of the excess water. Lay the project flat on a towel to dry. Do not forget to turn once in a while and take away the towel once most of the moisture has been collected by it.

What size knitting needles and crochet needle do you recommend?

We suggest a 5.5mm upwards depending on the effect you are after. Colinette like the loose style and we have been know to go up to 10mm.

Will Mohair pill?

Pilling happens mostly to woolen yarns as a matter of course. Mohair on the other hand is a sleek fibre that does not tend to pill.

Are these Yarns all hand dyed?

At Colinette we only hand dye our yarns, that is the way we have always done it. And the largest amount dyed in a single pot is a kilo. So we really are the artisan alchemist we say we are.

Is Colinette a real person?

As her son I can most definitely vouch for her. I do remember a conversation once at a TNNA show in the USA where the people at the table were discussing this very question. Finally a knitter joined the table and said that Colinette was real, and that she had taken one of her courses in the UK and even stayed overnight at her house. I was pleased I did not have to resolve this debate myself, and left the table with a small smile on my face.
