Description

Basically bamboo and wool rock. So many of you love working with our ART yarn and mention how soft the bamboo and wool blend is. So listening to your positive feedback we have used this same blend to make a super soft DK yarn. So dust off your DK patterns or download something fresh it’s time to start a DK revival Red Panda style.

We dye our yarns in small batches in our dye workshop in Wilshire, UK. Colours may vary from skein to skein, even within the same dye-lot. This is part of the charm of a hand painted yarn. If you buy more than one then we will do our best to match them as closely as possible. We take great care in photographing our yarns, but some colours may vary slightly.

Your yarn is absolutely gorgeous. However, the wool I ordered was not the colour I received. I emailed your customer service and was told to send it back. I did so and some days later the correct colour was sent to me. But, and this does matter, at no point did the person apologise to me or acknowledge the hassle and time spent for me having to return the wrong wool. When I received a new email with a tracking number from the delivery service, I had no idea what was happening, I just guessed it was the correct colour being sent. So I emailed the office to ask if this was the case: no reply.
I work with the public, and the easiest most effective thing one can do is be polite and keep people informed. I felt somewhat disappointed on both these scores.

Red Panda Wool and Bamboo Heaven

A great blend is not just the preserve of coffee makers, us yarn lovers have a say too. Take a pure super soft wool and then sprinkle in a touch of bamboo and what you get is a lusciously smooth, slightly shimmering yarn that is just perfect for knitted scarves, hats and gloves. By choosing these exquisite fibres from the start we are able to feed the hand dying process with ingredients that let the colours sing, dance, and sparkle in the lime light.

Hand Dyed Yarns In Blends of Bamboo and Wool

We all interpret things differently and this makes everything we say and do so wonderfully complex and compelling. When we place a yarn in our pasta pots ready for hand-dying there is fleeting energy that rises up. Take wool for example, always eager and ready to drink up the colours, but bamboos, viscose, and cottons need a little time to think things over. All these reactions and responses play out in font of my eyes as I hand-dye the yarn, and when the heat recedes and all the shades absorbed, a colour is born.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Red Panda?Red Panda is a Double Knit Yarn made of wool and bamboo blend (71% wool 29% bamboo). It is a single ply and has 127m/139yrds to a 50g skein.
Can I knit Red Panda to a DK pattern?Yes, but as we all know DK is a general term, our tension swatch of 10cm x 10cm comes out as 22sts x 28rows on a 4mm knitting needle. So before you start we always suggest doing a tension swatch to make sure you get the right size.
Can you use a washing machine to wash the Red Panda yarn?We do not advise machine washing for this yarn. As the fibre is very open, it will felt if overly agitated and or subject to big changes in temperature. A washing machine both heats up and agitates the items so the warning bells are ringing. So better to treat this hand dyded product with some good old fashioned hand washing in cold water using very little soap. Gently rinse and squeeze out some of the excess water. Lay the project flat on a towel to dry. Do not forget to turn once in a while and take away the towel once most of the moisture has been collected by it.
What size knitting needles and crochet needle do you recommend? We suggest a 4mm or more depending on the effect you are after. Colinette likes the loose style but as always this is to taste.
Will Red Panda pill?Pilling happens to most woolen yarns as a matter of course, over time the outer parts of the fibre rub and join to make little balls of fluff. But wait, with a bit of patience and maybe a combination of carefully pulling the balls off and things like sellotape even Velcro you can bring back a garment from looking tired to feeling fresh and new. Just go carefully when de-pilling and if you are pulling too much off then you are using the wrong technique.
Are these Yarns all hand dyed?At Colinette we only hand dye our yarns, that is the way we have always done it. And the largest amount dyed in a single pot is a kilo. So we really are the artisan alchemist we say we are.
Is Colinette a real person? As her son I can most definitely vouch for her. I do remember a conversation once at a TNNA show in the USA where the people at the table were discussing this very question. Finally a knitter joined the table and said that Colinette was real, and that she had taken one of her courses in the UK and even stayed overnight at her house. I was pleased I did not have to resolve this debate myself, and left the table with a small smile on my face.
